Peugeot 308: Recommended consumables : Engine oils

An engine oil is defined by :

• A grade
• An approval according to the specifications laid down by the ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association)
• One or more of approvals in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications (Manufacturers’ recommendations )

1. Grade of engine oil

N.B. : The grade of the engine oil is defined by the standards of the SAE (society automotive engineers).

The grade of an engine oil is represented by XX W XX.

(a) Digit or number corresponding to the grade of the engine oil when cold (the smaller the number, the easier it is to start from cold).

(b) Letter W for winter.

(c) Number indicating the grade of the engine oil when hot (the higher the number, the easier it is for the engine oil to withstand high temperatures and remain viscous).

An engine oil is developed to be highly efficient over a considerable temperature range (0W30 applicable between -45 and 45°C)).

N.B. : The grade of an engine oil is not linked to its performance with ageing, soiling or wear.

Example :A 5W30 oil is not necessarily more effective than an 0W30 oil and vice versa.

2. Technical specifications of the ACEA standards

The ACEA standards indicate minimum oil performance. The requirements imposed do not correspond to the oil performance recommended by PEUGEOT/CITROËN/DS/OPEL/VAUXHALL.

These standards are only a basis for performance.

N.B. : The specifications of the ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles - European automobile manufacturers association) standards do not correspond to the requirements of PEUGEOT/CITROËN/DS/OPEL/VAUXHALL.

The oils recommended by PEUGEOT/CITROËN/DS/OPEL/VAUXHALL standards have characteristics that are superior to the oils defined by ACEA standards.

CAUTION : The use of additives in engine oil is strictly prohibited.
